Celtic Knotwork Keepsake Box

I finished another woodburned piece – a small Celtic Knotwork Keepsake Box! Here’s the official description: “An original, symmetrical and intricate Celtic Knotwork design, woodburned into the lid of a keepsake/jewelry box. The box is made from balsa wood, is very lightly stained with concentrated tea to give the knotwork a subtle highlight, and has three coats of varnish, inside and out, for a nicely finished look.” There are more photos available – just click on this image to visit the item listing in my etsy shop.

Tulips Watercolor

Tulips WatercolorI’m pretty happy with the way this tulip watercolor painting came out, and am oddly pleased with the few lighter bluish or background leaves I put in that seem to add a bit of depth to the composition. (Oooh – doesn’t using the word ‘composition’ make me sound all artisty? Heh.) And I can tell that my actual painting technique is getting tidier/steadier too. However, I’ll have to see if there’s some way to adjust my scanner as really pale yellows and blues tend to disappear into white when scanned. In the actual painting (12″x9″), the blue background is a bit paler than it appears online/here, but I ‘fixed’ the background, made it a bit darker, for use on t-shirts, journals, framed prints, etc. – will print with no ‘faded’ spots better this way. Weird, the odd issues that pop up as you do this stuff.

Laundromats and Frost

Yay – posting photos again! I took the first shot in a small laundromat nearby. (What else is there to do in a laundromat except play with your camera?) The late afternoon sun was coming directly in the room and created some neat criss crossing lines and grids. The second image is a macro shot of frost (ice crystals) on the really old and dry wood of the ancient hitching post that’s in front of the house. I liked how the ice formed along the lines of the woodgrain that hadn’t yet rotted away. Huh – I guess there’s a line/perspective theme of sorts going on here. Peach Rose Watercolor

Peach Rose WatercolorIn my continuing effort to widen my watercolor styles/abilities, I’ve used a lot of unusual textures for this pretty typical ‘single rose’ image. I also like how the rose is just a TOUCH past its prime, without having ever gone into full, spread-out, bloom.

Now is also a good time to give many thanks and kudos to the image library over at Wet Canvas, which is where I got the reference photos for this piece. They have a ton of images there, shared by other artists, if you’re looking for some inspiration!

[You can get this painting image on cards, shirts, refrigerator magnets, etc. or as various sized unframed prints: 4×5, 8×10, 9×12]
