Busy Skies

Lots of things flying around out here lately! Yesterday there was a low-flying airplane buzzing around. Low meaning I often heard it long before I saw it, and only then quickly through the trees – these are often planes with 4 propeller engines, and are a dark matte grey, probably military planes. I did manage to run outside and snap a picture of it – it’s flying a little higher in this shot, but you get the idea:

And then today I went outside with the dogs and had to run back inside to get my camera again. We see a LOT of contrail activity out here, which, all conspiracy theories aside, I’m starting to believe really has to do with weather alteration. Why? Because we see the trails in parallel patterns and then the day turns hazy. (And a little cooler – I tend to LIKE those conditions, but it’s still a little weird!) Anyway, it wasn’t just ‘normal’ contrails – the ENTIRE sky was covered with fluffy white lines – like a recently ploughed field in the sky! It didn’t last too long because of the wind, but it was sure amazing!

Garter Snake

I just scared a garter snake as I was walking outside to feed the turtles. It slithered quickly to an indented area near the base of the Live Oak tree, and unfortunately for it seemed to find itself trapped between me and the tree. I took advantage of this situation and grabbed my camera, of course:

It was about four feet long – pretty long for a garter snake. I got as close as I could without it freaking out, took a few shots, then promised to leave it alone.

All Kinds of Craziness

Last weekend I drove up to the offices of Cafepress.com for the kickoff meeting for our “CP VOICE” Committee – the fifteen of us were voted in by the shopkeepers as a cross-section representation of the community to give our input in three areas – quality, merchandise, and shop management. It’s a brand new program, and we’re not exactly sure how it’s going to go yet, but it looks to be promising!

The weekend itself was really busy, barely got four hours of sleep each night – not just from the work but from the ‘hanging out’ with all the cool CPers I’ve come to know over the years, and also a bunch of new ones too. The weird part? I bought a windbreaker that arrived in the mail the same day I left for the get together. The catalog billed it as bright yellow, but it ended up being that sort of flourescent green/yellow that can be either or both depending on the light. Well, okay THAT’S not the weird part – the weird part is that the windbreaker matched the accent walls at CafePress exactly! (Bright limish-green is their signature color.) THAT was indeed the weird part – LOL.

Besides all of that I suddenly have a bunch of websites to update, some custom “Tshirt University” designs to make, and a bunch of other stuff on the list. I swear the list wasn’t that long when I left! Maybe someday I’ll even get back to doing some art! Stranger things have happened.

Rattlesnake!

rattlesnakeGuess what one of our dogs found in the yard the other day? Luckily it was the cautious, loud dog instead of the playful, less-apt-to-bark dog. John was able to hustle them both back inside without incident, while the three of us humans (our friend Tom was visiting) went back out with cameras.

You can see the rattle tucked right behind the head, and yes, it’s blurry because it’s rattling. (Rattlesnakes are notoriously shy about being stared at by a bunch of gawking photographers!) It’s a pretty big snake, about 4 feet long and quite thick. After the photo-pestering we went back inside and let it escape in peace. Haven’t seen it since, luckily!
