Illustration Friday

I finally figured out how to participate in Illustration Friday! This week’s theme, which expires tomorrow when they put out a new one (nothing like cutting it close), was ‘feet’ – LOL. So I had a little fun with a little feet painting. Not painted WITH feet – that would be a whole different sort of composition.

Crazy Tree Silhouette

Crazy Tree SilhouetteI’ve been trying to photograph this tree for years and I finally got the shot I’d been looking for – sun behind the tree, cloud in front of the sun, deep, almost dark, blue sky, yadda yadda. This tree is interesting because it’s actually clinging to the cliffside by our road, hanging out OVER the river. It’s a weird looking, twisty tree in a weird little spot. Ahhh, nature. Creation Myth Watercolor

I finally opened up my brand new package of 14″x10″ Arches Hot Press watercolor paper and christened it with this crazy, colorful painting I called, “Creation Myth”. It’s got a little of everything – a female creator figure, white light shooting through a prism at the top of a pyramid and splintering into a rainbow, and a solar system, lots of Celtic symbology thrown in, and a nice strand of dna, just for fun. And, I actually remembered to take progress photos…

And here’s the finished painting…

Celtic Springtime Mandala

Yes, yes, I’m still doing Celtic knotwork art as well as painting – LOL. Here’s a little springtime mandala – hand-drawn and then digitally colored and textured. It unintentionally ended up looking like a design made from rope – could be adapted for some kind of nautical purposes, don’t you think? But I was in more of a springy mood than a sea-faring mood I guess. ANYWAY… here’s the design:

Crocheting with Plastic Bags

Today in the Etsy blog I ran across a link to a post on the readymade blog about using plastic bags to crochet a NEW bag. It’s actually a very cool idea and there are patterns to use too, but mostly this post brought up a nice memory. A number of years ago when John and I went to Oregon for a quick vacation, we stayed at a place called the SeaDreamer Inn in Brookings-Harbor. Penny, the proprietess, was also taking care of her great aunt, who was, apparently, ahead of this bag-crocheting trend. She would take colored plastic bags and crochet them into neat little oval placemats; she gave us about five of them when we left. I think I still have a few here and there – they’re almost indestructible. Except not very good for hot pans – LOL.
