This morning as I was refilling the outside water bowls for the local wildlife, I saw a Western Racer slipping away from the garden container. It was greenish yellow with a long narrowing taper – probably only about 3 feet long, but enough to startle me, since I was pretty close when I finally saw it there. That’s the first Western Racer I’ve ever seen around here – mostly I see rattlesnakes, garter snakes, and gopher (bull) snakes, although once we actually saw a black and white king snake (draped across the top of our wooden fence like garland – what a sight!) Anyway, the racer snuck away quickly through some weeds – probably for the best.
