There’s a reason why we don’t use the kitchen door when we go in and out at night in the summer. At 2 a.m. we were reminded of this reason…. we woke up to our dogs prancing back and forth, and back and forth, and back and forth in the kitchen, their nails clicking on the floor in a canine frenzy. But they weren’t barking like they do if they hear coyotes. No, they were chasing the large BAT that was swooping around the kitchen.

Luckily, we’ve had this happen two times before so we pretty much knew what to do. Open the doors and a window… Close the dogs in the bathroom so that the bat won’t keep flying high and missing the lower door and window openings. Only took us a half hour of shooing and ducking and hoping nothing else sneaks IN, for the bat to find its way out again.

So, the moral of the story is, use the porch door on the other side of the house – we call it the ‘airlock’ because there’s an outside screen door and then the inside door – good place to de-bat the atmosphere before stepping in the house proper. Maybe I should tattoo that on my forearm or something. *grin*.
