Old Railroad Trestle Bridge
Nearby, in Rosendale, New York, there's an old railroad trestle bridge that's very picturesque - lots of rusty girders and half-hidden in plant growth, etc. It's been partially repurposed into a pedestrian bridge too, which stretches over a local Hudson River tributary, so that's pretty cool. I haven't gone across the river to take photos from on top of the bridge yet, but I did get a few nice ones from underneath!

(Click on any of the images to see a larger version over at my gallery at Imagekind.)

I love how the plants are using it as a trellace, and the cut stone of the foundation is just fantastic. And who doesn't love rusty girders and rivets - doing the 'steampunk' thing before steampunk was 'in' - heh. Oh, and I love the way the girders in the background of the fifth photo sort of look like they're all over the place, in no particular or useful configuration (as well as the bright red leaves in the foreground, of course).

Your photos are very well done. As a novice digital photographer, I am wondering what type of camera and equipment you use to take such great shots. Any tips or info you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Chet - thank you! :) I have an older FujiFilm s6000fd 'bridge' camera - it's not a point and shoot, but not really a dSLR either. It's got a manual zoom (love that), and a 10x lens, and 6MP. (Fuji has a number of newer versions out now.) I also use photoshop to tweak contrast, brightness, etc. - that's my own digital darkroom - LOL. One thing I love about digital photography is that you can take as many photos as you want while practicing, and don't have to wait for the film to be developed to see how you did - LOL. Anyway - hope this was useful to you - happy photo-taking!

Thanks, Kristen. The info is very helpful. I do have Photoshop but will have to limp along with my point and shoot Canon Powershot until I can upgrade to a better camera. A manual zoom sounds great to me at this point as my digital zoom leaves a lot to be desired!
